Terrazzo Flooring

For A Classy, Contemporary Look

Terrazzo flooring presents a classy, contemporary look of elegance.

With it's highly polished and smooth finish, it is increasingly the flooring of choice for ultra-modern, open settings such as large hallways or loft syle living.

Waterproof, extremely durable and easily maintained, terrazzo makes an ideal flooring for bathrooms or other living areas where a contemporary look is desired.

Make A Statement With Color

Terrazzo is one of the most expensive types of hard flooring available, but lots of fun to create because you can choose what you want in the "mix"...

About Terrazzo

Also known as Venetian mosaic, terrazzo is labor-intensive to create and is manually produced from chippings of stone (frequently granite or marble) and glass, or both, laid in resin or concrete. This mixture of materials is usually spread on location, but pre-made floor tiles are also available.

Once it has set the surface is ground, repeatedly, by machine and polished to a perfectly smooth finish. This process increases the colors of the chippings, creating a bright, seamless floor.

Patterns and textures vary according to the chip size. Chips with a softer shape will end up resembling a marble floor, while sharper, smaller chips will give a mosaic appearance.

Resin flooring is another option, and is spread on-site only... Identical to terrazzo, but without the chipping... It is solid in color and may have a solid-colored motif, like a swirl, that makes it look like a painting!

No matter if it is spread on site or pre-made tiles are installed, either one requires the expertise of a professional, which accounts for a good portion of the expsense. Once installed it will last better than 50 years and be very difficult to remove if your tastes change... so choose wisely.

Floor Design

One thing about having terrazzo flooring spread on-site is the flexibility it allows you to create your own original floor. You can munipulate the distribution of the chips, color, patterns and textures, and even add other materials into the mix, making it possible to create a motif (if desired) of your own unique design. Your supplier can produce any idea or plan you come up with...

Must Do

  • Choose a reputable installation company.
  • Ask for cutomer recommendations.
  • Confirm the subfloor can take the weight of the floor.
  • Any plywood underlayment must waterproofed to prevent rotting from the water in the mortar that terrzaao is laid in.

    Maintenance

As difficult as terrazzo flooring can be to install it is equally as easy to maintain! Just sweep with a soft broom on a regular basis and damp mop using diluted household detergent. Adding shine to terrazzo can be dangerously slippery, so ONLY use the product recommended by your supplier..... NOTHING else!

    Installation

    LEAVE IT TO THE PROFESSIONAL..!

You can choose to have terrazzo flooring spread on-site, which can be quite involved and takes longer to complete, or design your own tiles or go with tiles already produced. Either way, hire a professional installer!

If you are looking for a sleek, modern look on your floors, check out terrazo flooring and you'll see the advantages it has to offer. It may be expensive and a bit more difficult to install, but it will last, and last, and last, and will save you money in the long run because it will be many years before you will need to refinish or replace it.
